SEALS (South Eastern Area Laboratory Services) as part of NSW Health Pathology, is a fully accredited, publicly owned ‘not-for-profit’ pathology service, providing high quality laboratory medicine services 24 hours, 365 days a year to Sydney Children's Hospital, Prince of Wales Private Hospital and all public hospitals serviced by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).  SEALS also provides a comprehensive referral service to other hospitals, laboratories and community based Medical Practitioners.

    Changes in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM). As part of national harmonization and patient safety initiative SEALS therapeutic drug reporting units will be changing to align therapeutic drug concentration measurements with the units used for drug dosing.

    SEALS is in the process of phasing out the CKMB assay in line with recommendations from the Myocardial Infarction International Task Force to use only higher sensitivity (hs) and specificity troponins for the diagnosis of AMI, ACS and reinfarction1. Troponin also has prognostic value compared to CKMB.

    As of December 2014 SEALS will be adopting the WHO 2013 guidelines for the diagnostic classification of hyperglycaemia first detected during pregnancy. These guidelines, distinguishing gestational diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus in pregnancy as two separate categories, have been endorsed by the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) with agreement from the Royal Australasian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG).

    All Medicare eligible pathology tests are bulk billed for all Australian Medicare card holders, this means there are no ‘out of pocket expenses’. As of December 2014, any patient who does not possess an Australian Medicare card will be required to pay an upfront fee of $120 prior to each collection. Where the total costs of all the pathology tests requested exceed $120, the patient will be invoiced for the balance.
