Departmental Services
The Anatomical Pathology Department provides comprehensive diagnostic and consultative histopathology, frozen section, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, muscle enzyme histochemistry and autopsy services.

The Department receives specimens from, and provides all of the above services to, Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH), the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW), the Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH), the Sydney Hospital/Sydney Eye Hospital(SH/SEH), and the Prince of Wales Private Hospital (PWPH).  In addition the Department provides all gynaecological cytology and muscle pathology services for the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service (SESAHS). The Central & Eastern Sydney Breast Screening Service (in the RHW) is also serviced by the Department.  The Department provides an on-demand on-site fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) service.

The Department has many areas of specialised interest, including

• Gynaecological pathology
• Neonatal/fetal and paediatric pathology,
• Muscle pathology
• Ocular pathology
• Gynaecological cytology and FNAB cytology.

The Department has an establishment of  9.5 Staff Specialists, 4 Registrars, and over 30 histology/cytology and office staff. It processes about 20,000 surgical pathology cases and 10,000 cytology cases per annum.
The Department participates in numerous clinicopathological meetings, covering most of the surgical and medical specialties, ranging from weekly to three monthly.  Some staff specialists hold conjoint academic appointments to the School of Pathology, University of NSW, and are involved in lectures and tutorials to undergraduate medical students.

The Department is accredited for 4 years of postgraduate training of pathology registrars by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).

The Department is engaged in a number of collaborative research activities, including tissue banking in association with the Lowy Institute at UNSW. It also participates in the external Quality Assurance Program (QAP) and Benchmarking Program of the RCPA, and is NATA/RCPA Accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 (1999) standard.

Associate Professor Salisbury is a Conjoint Associate Professor of Pathology at UNSW, is a member of the  RCPA, Australasian Division IAP, International Academy of Cytology, Australian Society of Cytology, AMA, and is a NATA Assessor.
Her areas of interest include: general adult histopathology, cytopathology, breast and endocrine pathology.

St.George Campus 

The Anatomical Pathology Department provides a comprehensive histopathology service to St George Hospital, BreastScreen Southern Sydney, Sutherland Hospital, Calvary Hospital, with referrals from St.George Private Hospital, Kareena Private Hospital and other private referees.

The range of services provided include:
1. Routine anatomical pathology, including immunohistochemistry service;
2. Non-gynaecological cytology;
3. Frozen section service for all above listed hospitals;
4. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology Clinic;
5. Attendance at clinicopathological meetings at St. George and Sutherland Hospitals;
6. Autopsy service to St. George Public and St. George Private Hospitals and Sutherland Hospitals;
7. Electron microscopy service;
8. Undergraduate teaching for University of NSW Medical School years 4 and 5;
9. Postgraduate teaching for St. George Hospital junior medical staff;
10. Research activities and collaboration with clinical teams at St. George Hospital;

A/Prof Ewan Millar is a Senior Staff Specialist in Anatomical Pathology with sub-speciality interest in breast and renal pathology. He is the Supervising Pathologist of the SEALS HER2 CISH service and holds conjoint appointments as Associate Professor with the UNSW and UWS. He also holds a part-time appointment as a Visiting Pathologist at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre & Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Breast Cancer Translational Research Group and is a member of the Central Pathology Review Panel for two large national randomised clinical trials in breast cancer organised by the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TTROG). His research interests involve the development and validation of new predictive and prognostic factors in clinical breast cancer. He is a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Science of the RCPA and is a member of the ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG).

Dr Tran is a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW and participates in routine departmental histopathology reporting in general pathology, including paediatric gastroenterology, breast pathology and non gynae-cytology with an interest in dermatopathology and diagnostic epidermolysis bullosa.  She is involved in medical student teaching, including assessment of medical student independent learning project and is currently supervisor of pathology Registrars in the department.  She has been involved in research projects with department of Dermatology in EB and is a member of the Australasian Blistering Diseases Foundation.

    As of December 2014 SEALS will be adopting the WHO 2013 guidelines for the diagnostic classification of hyperglycaemia first detected during pregnancy. These guidelines, distinguishing gestational diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus in pregnancy as two separate categories, have been endorsed by the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) with agreement from the Royal Australasian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG).
